The Last Race

Author: Francis James

“I’ll only be a minute.” Said Joseph “You can warm up the van; I parked it close to the entrance.” Joseph sat in the damped track waiting for a moment of lightening to pass by. Joseph was gripping tightly to the ticket; which held his very last dollar. The announcer shouted from the speakers; Joseph stood from the soaking seat. Lightening wasn’t far behind from the leading horse when a shot rang through the stadium. Joseph dripping from the rain, turned around to see his daughter holding onto a rifle. Lightening crashed into the mudding track, bleeding from the neck. “I can’t lose you to an addiction, not when I love you father.” Crystal spoke as she placed the rifle down onto the steps.
