Survival Patterns

Author: Robert Quick

Darwin's clothes were frost-charred. Black ice crystals cracked and hailed to the ground as he dusted himself off. "I guess we humans are stronger than we look." A dry rasping chuckle escaped, making him wince in pain at the burning sensation in his throat.

Other frost-charred rubble, the remnants of Darwin's house, shifted. Somewhere underneath blue-ened boards, a straining grunt emerged.

"You've got to be kidding me." Darwin rolled his eyes and patted his pockets trying to find his tranquilizer gun.

Splintered, snow-covered wood gave birth to a skinny alien. Zeus, who thought he had named himself a common Earth name due to a mix up of stolen information, pushed himself to his feet, triumphant. "You see, you can never defeat me. I am almighty. I am all powerful and you are a pitiful DNA-slug. Bow down to me."

Unarmed human faced off against unarmed alien.

"I destroyed your ray gun and I buried you with my house. I'm tired of you, Zeus. Take what's left of your robot and get the hell off my planet."
