For My Friend

Author: Tad Winslow

You're taking a path Through blades of grass As sharp as knives

We used to laugh And let things pass

Now you and I've Led separate lives

I sympathize Heaving desperate cries At the thought of you leaving Forever-- I cannot fully realize-- I'm not quite believing How you couldn't be breathing

I cannot let go However vacant or hollow Your statements are I'll follow Them to the cement on the basement Where you lie silent, limp, and complacent

We've been through hardships We've seen who can throw their stone the farthest At dusk in New Durham near the lake in the forest Where the air still collects The dust of reminiscent steps

Do you know how much I care? There isn't a sharper arrow In flight right now Quite like the threat Of if I ever let you down The heart in my chest Will rest sleepless Beside you underground
