The Darkness Closes

Author: Luke Nicolaou

We didn't have much time left. The sun was setting fast. We had gathered as many supplies as we could and jammed as much as we could in every door and window. But we knew we wouldn't last the night in this cursed place. Already, the nameless, horrid creatures were stirring, lurking in the shadows waiting for us to make a mistake.

We shut the door as we hurried back inside, locking and bolting it behind us. A heavy book case was shoved over it. We knew it wouldn't last. Those _things_ knew we were here. And they wouldn't stop until we were dead, or the sun came up. Our small group huddled behind our makeshift barricades. Clicks and clacks were the only sounds as bullets were chambered and slides drawn back.

The sun had nearly set. A howl went up outside, that made me want to claw at my ears. Then the sun finally hid its face and the sounds of thousands of running feet echoed through the empty street. With a sense of finality, I pumped the shotgun, and waited for _them_ to enter.
